How AI search is changing what a website has to do — and what it means for you.

AI is the new front door

More people now ask ChatGPT or Gemini instead of typing into Google. AI answers from a short list — if your site isn't readable, you're not on it.

What this means for you: Being findable on Google is no longer enough. AI is becoming the first place people look.

Structured facts win citations

When AI recommends a business, it pulls name, address, hours, and prices directly from the site. Businesses with structured facts are easier for AI to cite than those with PDF menus or image-only pages.

What this means for you: Your key facts need to be real text on your site — not a PDF, not a photo.

Reviews feed AI answers

AI assistants weigh review volume and ratings when ranking local businesses — and they quote review snippets. What customers say about you shapes what AI tells people.

What this means for you: Encouraging happy customers to leave reviews pays off in AI answers too.

Facts need to stay current

New AI models launch constantly, and what they look for keeps evolving. A fix that works today might not be enough next year.

What this means for you: After you work through the fixes below, re-scan to confirm the gains stuck.

When someone asks an AI assistant for a local recommendation, it doesn't just read websites — it pulls your hours, reviews, photos, and how active you look straight from your Google Business Profile. A thin or outdated profile is one of the most common reasons AI recommends a competitor instead of you.

  • Hours listed and accurate — including holidays and special closures.
  • Recent posts — an update in the last 7 days. AI favors businesses that look active.
  • Google reviews — a solid base of reviews helps AI decide who to recommend.
  • Replies to reviews — responding in the last 30 days shows the business is engaged.
  • Correct primary category — “Italian restaurant”, not just “Restaurant”. Specific beats generic.
  • 10+ photos — listings with photos get far more clicks, and AI trusts them more.
  • Website link correct — your homepage, not a Facebook page or an old domain.

Things you can do yourself

1

No main headline on the page+6 ptshigh impact

Structure

Where we found it: amazon.com

Every page needs one clear main headline saying what the page is about — that's the first thing AI reads. Your page doesn't have one, so AI has to guess. Found: AI cannot identify the page's main topic

The fixAdd one headline near the top of the page. The box below shows the exact text to use — we've pre-filled it with your business info from the scan (or an example if we couldn't find it). Then set it to Heading 1 style (not just big bold text — the actual 'Heading 1' setting). You don't paste the code — you type the headline text and set the style in your editor. On Wix: in the editor, click the headline text, then in the toolbar click the style dropdown (it may say 'Paragraph') and choose 'Heading 1'. On Squarespace: click the text block, in the toolbar click the text-format dropdown and choose 'Heading 1'. On WordPress: click the text block, click the paragraph symbol in the toolbar, choose 'Heading', then in the right sidebar set 'Level' to 'H1'. Use Heading 1 exactly once per page.

4

No Contact page+2 ptsmedium impact

Content

Where we found it: Checked your navigation menu and common URLs — no Contact page found

AI looks for a contact page to verify your business is real and reachable. Without one, you look less legitimate. Found: AI cannot verify basic business facts

The fixWhat AI looks for on your Contact page: your street address; your phone number; your opening hours; a way to message you (a contact form or an email address). The box below is a starter Contact page — pre-filled with what we found on your site. Copy it, fill in the [bracketed] blanks, and paste it onto the new page. Create the page: On Wix: in the editor click 'Pages' (left panel) → '+ Add Page' → name it Contact. On Squarespace: in the Pages panel click '+' next to Main Navigation → 'Page' → name it Contact. On WordPress: dashboard → Pages → Add New → title it Contact → Publish. On Shopify: Online Store → Pages → Add page → title it Contact → Save (Shopify includes a contact form template — keep it). Then make sure it appears in your main menu: on Wix/Squarespace/Shopify new pages add automatically; on WordPress go to Appearance → Menus → check 'Contact' → Add to Menu → Save Menu.
Contact [Your Business Name] We'd love to hear from you. Here's how to reach us: Visit us [Your Full Address] Call us [Your Phone Number] Email us [Your Email Address] Hours [Your Opening Hours] Prefer to message us? Add a contact form to this page — every platform has a free form block (Wix: Add → Contact → Form; Squarespace: Add Block → Form; WordPress: add the free 'WPForms Lite' plugin; Shopify: Online Store → Pages → your Contact page already includes a form template).
7

Headlines out of order+2 ptslow impact

Structure

Where we found it: amazon.com

Your headlines jump levels (like going straight from Heading 1 to Heading 3). AI builds an outline of your page from these — skipping levels breaks the outline. Found: (e.g. h1 directly to h3) - hierarchy is unclear

The fixClick each headline and set its style in order: the page's main headline to Heading 1, section headlines to Heading 2, sub-section headlines to Heading 3. On Wix: click the text, toolbar style dropdown, choose the level. On Squarespace: click the text block, toolbar format dropdown. On WordPress: click the block, set to Heading, choose Level H1/H2/H3 in the sidebar. Never jump from Heading 1 straight to Heading 3.

8

Missing social share title+2 ptslow impact

Metadata

Where we found it: amazon.com

When someone shares your page (or when AI shows a link preview), there's no title set — so it shows something generic or blank. Found: (OpenGraph)

The fixCopy your page title into the social share title field. On Wix: editor → Pages → three dots → 'Social Share' → paste into the title field and upload a share image. On Squarespace: Pages → gear icon → SEO tab → scroll to 'Social Image' (Squarespace uses your SEO title automatically). On WordPress with Yoast: Yoast box → 'Social' tab → fill in 'Facebook title' and 'Twitter title'.

2

Add your business facts as structured data+4 ptshigh impact

AI works best when your business facts (name, address, phone, hours) are provided in a format it can read directly, instead of it having to guess from your page text. Your site doesn't have this.

3

Your pages aren't labeled for AI readers+4 ptsmedium impact

Your page's sections aren't labeled in a way AI can understand — it can't tell your main content apart from your menu, sidebar, and footer. Found: <main>, <article>, <footer>

5

Questions not in AI-readable format+4 ptsmedium impact

You may answer customer questions on your site, but they're not marked in a way AI can pull directly into its answers — with your business name attached.

6

No question-style headlines+2 ptsmedium impact

People ask AI things as questions ('What are your hours?'). Headlines phrased as questions match that — and give AI direct answers to quote. Yours has none. Found: AI cannot find direct answers to cite

9

Website a bit slowlow impact

Your site takes a couple seconds to respond. That adds up when AI is reading many pages. Found: 2.6s
