Why doesn't AI mention my business?
The uncomfortable test
Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for a recommendation in your category — "best plumber near me," "quiet restaurant downtown." If your business doesn't come up, or the AI hedges, invents your services, or names a competitor instead, that's the symptom. The causes are almost always on this list.
1. The crawlers can't get in
AI systems can only mention what they've read. If your robots.txt or your server blocks AI crawlers, your site is invisible to them — silently. This is the most common cause and the easiest to check.
2. The facts aren't on your site
AI answers from published facts. If your hours, prices, or service area live only on Facebook or in your head, the AI has nothing solid to quote. "Contact us for pricing" is not a fact an AI can cite.
3. Your facts are trapped
Text baked into images, menus uploaded as PDFs, or content loaded by JavaScript that bots don't execute — humans see it, machines don't. If your key facts aren't plain HTML text, they barely exist for AI.
4. The AI has to guess
Is "(412) 555-0140" your sales line or your fax from 2009? Without structured data labeling your facts, the AI guesses — and it would rather cite a competitor with clear labels than risk quoting you wrong.
5. Your info disagrees with itself
Your site says "Main St," Google says "Main Street," Yelp has your old phone number. Conflicting information makes you unverifiable — and an AI that can't verify you will skip you for a competitor it can.
6. Your content is thin or vague
"We provide quality solutions" says nothing quotable. A page with a few hundred words of plain, specific description — what you do, for whom, where — gives the AI something to actually cite.
